RESTORATION
PRESERVING HISTORY
The Cathedral Church has experienced devastating damage. In its two centuries, earthquakes in 1825, 1918, and more recently the 6.8 magnitude earthquake of August 21st , 2018, have caused significant damage. Restoration work is now urgently required for the “Seat of our Anglican Diocese”. Our Mother Church of the Anglican Diocese of Trinidad and Tobago, had to be closed after substantial damage. There is cracking to walls, the steeple, and chancel roof, as well as the destruction of several stone pinnacles. The Cathedral Church continues to suffer from major leaks with numerous broken roof slates, cracked gutters, and failing old repairs that today need serious attention. With moisture trapped within the walls and structural timbers this has resulted in rotting and significant damage. Vegetation growth has caused the cracking and deterioration of the structure, and the roof of the Church also suffers from termite damage. The significant damages must be immediately addressed. The Cathedral Church of the Holy Trinity is also a Heritage Site Asset of the National Trust of Trinidad and Tobago with a glorious history as a historic edifice and architectural gem, that stands majestically in the heart of the capital city of Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.
The Government of Trinidad and Tobago provided the project management services of the Urban Development Corporation of Trinidad and Tobago – UDeCOTT, on a pro bono basis and UDeCOTT confirmed the Holy Trinity Cathedral restoration cost at $70 million dollars. The Government of Trinidad and Tobago allocated $20 million to the restoration costs in the annual budget for the 2021 fiscal year which has not been utilized to date, and in the annual budget for the 2022 fiscal year the Anglican Church in the Diocese of Trinidad and Tobago Government has provided a further allocation of 150% tax concession to national companies that make contributions up to $1million/company, towards Heritage Site Asset of the National Trust of Trinidad and Tobago.
